St. John’s Wort for Anxiety: No Evidence

According to a recent expansive review of anti-anxiety herbs – St. John’s wort, kava extract and valerian - there is no evidence to support their effectiveness. In addition, the review raised concerns regarding the safety of valerian. As poignantly noted in the article:

“Patients should be extremely cautious about garnering medical advice from the Internet,” says Zoberi. “There is no evidence that those medications are effective. If a patient wishes to avoid drug therapy, her doctor can suggest alternatives such as cognitive behavioral therapy.”
