Watching Water Freeze

While recently visiting the San Francisco Exploratorium, I discovered one of the most elegant and beautiful exhibits called Watching Water Freeze. The installation uses two polarizers (one below the ice and one above) and a sheet of ice, which can be washed with water to melt the previous layer of ice crystals. As evident from the photo gallery below, what is produced when the ice reforms is a remarkable melding of color, contrast, and form. Click through to enlarge.
