The Millennium Simulation
The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory produces a periodic Science in the Theater lecture series as part of their community outreach and publicity efforts. Last night, they had a great talk by three prominent astrophysicists entitled Dark Secrets: What Science Tells Us About the Hidden Universe, which was primarily focused on our current understanding of dark matter and dark energy. The presentation was very informative and had some great visualizations including the following video from The Millennium Simulation. The first part of the movie shows the distribution of dark matter in the universe at the present time and emphasizes the heterogeneity and morphology of that dispersion through different scales. Then at 2:25 min, the video changes into a 3-dimensional representation of the simulated universe.
The Millennium Simulation (The most accurate 3D map of the universe) is
complemented by the hauntingly beautiful Echoes by Pink Floyd.
