TED: Michael Merzenich on Re-Wiring the Brain

It was once thought that the brain was a stagnant organ, where by the time you had reached adulthood, all of the neuronal connections were permanent. Today, however, science has struck down this previous paradigm and replaced it with a picture of the brain where neuronal connections exhibit plasticity. In the following talk by Michael Merzenich, via TED, he examines this plasticity and it’s impact on our lives.

From TED:

Neuroscientist Michael Merzenich looks at one of the secrets of the brain’s incredible power: its ability to actively re-wire itself. He’s researching ways to harness the brain’s plasticity to enhance our skills and recover lost function.
