Coal Ash Spill in Tennessee
This is finally getting some media attention, I saw a short segment on it tonight on MSNBC. Last week, on 22Dec08, the coal ash holding pond for a coal-fired electric plant in Tennessee ruptured depositing more than 2.2 million pounds of toxic materials into more than 300 acres of East Tennessee. This stuff is the residuals from the burning of coal in power plants and is really toxic and even radioactive. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured or had to be taken to the hospital, however this is going to take a long time to clean up. The story was recently covered by the New York Times, which provides further details. Below is the initial aerial footage of the extent of the damage.
This is a major environmental catastrophe, here in the United States, that is only now receiving media attention. Here is the original story as covered by the Knoxville News Sentinel.
It’s time to bring safe nuclear power back to America.
